First Prize - The Gold Medal goes to Merlot – Avdat 2003 from
Carmey Avdat

Merlot Avdat - a wine produced in cooperation between the Ben Shoshan winery in Kibbutz Bror Chayil and Carmey Avdat Farm from the Wine Route in the Negev Mountains - has been awarded first prize in the Eshkol HaZahav competition for 2005. The wine was selected from among nine entrants in the category of small boutique wineries that produce up to 10,000 bottles per year.
More than 140 wines from 42 different wineries participated in the competition and were divided into 14 different categories. The wines were evaluated by experienced wine experts, who tasted the wines and offered their critique over a three-day period. The winners were announced at a gala evening in the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv in the presence of the minister of agriculture and more than 300 guests.
Profits from sale of the tickets for the event and auction of the wines were donated to Elem, an organization that aids youth in distress.
